This is the place to post your experiences with the ati2dvag.dll - infinite loop problem.

The first recommendation is to make sure you're using the most current drivers for your card.
You can get them at the ATI web site.

If that doesn't fix the problem then:

I posted the fix that worked for my one machine here:
http://www.sightsea.com/pghpchd/pages/infinite_loop.html

...but I've been getting emails from people not able to find a solution because their PC is configured in a different way.

I'm hoping that anyone that finds a fix for their particular PC will report in here and share their experience in order to help others.

Please register ( It's quick and easy and your email address will be hidden ) and tell us what you've found that works.

Thanks.

Steve Karl

Here's the fix for the infinite loop problem caused by ati2dvag.dll
that worked for me ( on one machine ) and has worked for some others.

Right click on My Computer
Choose Properties
Choose the Hardware(Tab)
Choose Device Manager(button)
Click the [+] next to System devices
Right click on CPU to AGP Controller
Choose the Update Driver(button)

Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Choose Next(button)
Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install."
Choose Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Hit Next(button)
Hit Finish(button)
Reboot.

On my Dell Dimension 9100 Desktop, the file was called 82801 PCI bridge.

Thank you ! This worked on a Compaq NX 7010.
Instead of looking for the CPU to AGP controller, look for
"Inter(r) 82XX to PCI bridge"

okay, here's my share of problems. read only if you want to lol, this are views of someone inexperienced with coms.

firstly, this ati crap problem started about 4 months ago for me. the com will first hang for about 30 seconds to a minute. with you mouse stuck as well, then i will hear a click in the cpu(similar sound to when you shut it down). then the blue screen will appear saying something about infinite loop and ati2dvag. no other possible actions except to shut the com down with the manual on off button. tried a few more times, sometimes, the resolution will get blown up and colors distorted after the click sound instead of blue screen. then other times, a loud engine sound will be heard from cpu. worst is nothing happens at all and it just stay hanged there.

Of course, i couldnt figure out what the hell is actually wrong with it, i asked my friends, they say it might be overheating. but for their case, they get the infinite loop problem after a period of time with their com on. then i realised that their infinite loop problem is nothing to do with ati, since they don't have the file. Afterall, the ATi users get their infinite loop right in the beggining, so overheating is out of the picture.

i brought the cpu over to my aunt's house since she's kinda good with coms, plugged it in and no problems. which was weird. switch it off and on for a few times still no problems nor that blue screen.

i sorta concluded that the problem was the wires loosening lol, so after the visit to my aunt's house, my com was functioning properly for almost 2 months then the problems persist again, once in a while, when the problem persist, i simply tighten the monitor to cpu wire, ironcially, coincidence or not, the com recovers after that.

till about last week, the worst attack, it went into the blue screen almost everytime, and when i try to switch it on and off too many times, the cpu would produce some sort of loud engine noise. pisses me off real bad.

i found this solution today in this forum, and i tried it, cant say anything yet though, since my com works well from time to time even though the ati was still in it.

what i would appreciate, is can someone tell me the basis of this solution? what's pci to pci bridge? and the 82801 thing for that matter and how are these related to ati2dvag?. sorry i'm a total computer nut.

Possibly call the manufacturer of you PC and explain the fix and ask if they're aware of any other options to repair the problem relative to your specific hardware.

I've been having this problem on my company laptop. They flattened it once, reinstalling everything. That didn't fix the problem. The second time they put in a new hard drive and reinstalled everything. That hasn't worked either. I think this time I'll ask for a new laptop. If they do come up with a solution, I'll post it in here.

Bigtuna ...

What Brand / Model of laptop is having the problem?

Also ... If you ask for a new one make sure it's a different company. :-)

Hi, I'm excited that I found an active discussion about this problem and that I'm not alone with it.

I have a Dell Precision 650 workstation and my graphcs card is an ATI FireGL X1.

I have been having this problem for the last couple of years. It only happens when I run 3D applications such as Autodesk Maya or Google Earth. The way I have been working around is it to throttle down the Hardware Acceleration to the next-to-none setting. This is found in the Display Properties: right-click on the desktop, click Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot. This generally prevents the crashing, but makes 3D apps ridiculously slow, and causes certain video types not to display.

So I was excited to try the method prescribed here. I found the "processor to AGP" device and changed it, seemed to work. But the result is pretty much the same as my previous method - things are stable but badly lagging.

A note for those who try this and may want to change back: you can follow the same steps to revert back to the other driver, but you will probably have to uncheck the "Show compatible hardware" box to get it to show up in the list - I had to.

Anyway, I wish there was a way to fix this infinite loop garbage without sacrificing the power of the graphics card. I will keep looking and will share if I find anything.
