Roll you own Metronome:

Create 2 clicks that you like for metronome clicks. ( or download these and extract them to your audio directory )
One pitched normal, one slightly lower in pitch.
Import them to separate audio tracks. Drag the low one to beats 2,3,4 and leave the high on on beat 1.
Copy the measure and paste it at measure 2 for as many repetitions as you need.
Assign them all to a bus called metronome.

You can also use more that 2 tracks to simulate other rhythmic feels.
Clicks on the "ands" and clicks emulating 3/4 against 4/4 are some examples.
I've, at times, used 6 tracks mixed differently throughout the song.

Now what do you gain by doing this?

1) Immediate accurate and very fast control of volume of all aspects,
( loud click and soft click ) during any process, recording or playback.
2) The ability to custom mix the metronome using envelopes for different sections of a song that demand a different balance.
4) The ability to slide the metronome track, in time, during certain sections of a song.

Save a few metronome templates.
You'll never have a problem again!
